Luxor Shorts - Vol. 3 (DVD)

Three Don Kirshner shows plus a clip from Italian TV.
Sabbath are amazing. Filmed around the time of the
Sabotage album - surely their greatest period.
This is the best quality version I've seen.
The Cameo footage has a code stamp in the middle
of the screen plus a timecode at the bottom.
Despite those niggles it's still superb. I have never
seen an alternative version. If you don't enjoy
this performance you'd better check your pulse.
The T.Rex broadcast is reasonable quality and certainly
shows Marc Bolan in a better light than the TV series.
Last is a nice B&W video of Soft Machine with Alan Holdsworth.

Short FM show from this great band.
There are a few small glitches but it's
generally very good.

Supersonic - Vol. 4 (DVD)

Another batch. A few audio 'phuts' on the first episode
otherwise decent quality. Some good 'uns on this one.
Even David Essex does two of his better numbers.

Van der Graaf - Hull 1977 (wave)

Remastered audience recording. Not bad compared
to most 70s Graaf boots. I saw them in Preston
the day after this show. A lesser quality 'Crying Wolf'
and a two minute section of 'Door' are also available
from this show but I haven't included them prefering to
stick with the better quality material. This is the five piece
line-up with Graham Smith & Charles Dickie.

Progressive Nation tour - Manchester 2009 (wave)

Complete show from the Apollo.
More prog-metal than you can shake a stick at.
This is a remastered audience recording.
Not perfect but not bad.
To be truthful I'm not really that big a fan
of Dream Theater. I prefer the other three acts.
Sure, DT are great musicians but those bursts of genius
are buried in some naff (to me) Iron Maiden stylings
and the pseudo-religious lyrics make me cringe.
Parts of their set are, I readily concede, simply stunning.
Unexpect are my latest fad. Highly inventive and ambitious.
They have a new album in the pipeline and I'm really
looking forward to hearing it.
Bigelf is another band I like, often described as
a blend of Black Sabbath & Pink Floyd.
Opeth are, as always, superb. They steal the show for me.

Sykotik Sinfoney - studio sessions (mp3 at 320kbps)

An unusual US band who's only official release
was on the 'Bad Channels' movie soundtrack.
Active from 1988 - 1994 they developed an elaborate
stage show with costumes, masks and stilts!
I got these mp3s from their old website many moons ago.
The music is very diverse drawing on multiple genres
incuding metal, punk, prog, rap, Frank Zappa
and Beer Keller music complete with yodeling.
I've listened to this a lot. Oh no! I'm listening to it again
...growing taller...growing taller...

The Babys - Cleveland 1980 (FLAC)

I didn't pay much attention to The Babys when they
first appeared. They seemed like a bubble-gum rock
outfit who would mainly appeal to American girls.
When the Union Jacks album came out I read a review
by a similarly sceptical hack who admitted he had been
won over by the songs after a couple of listens. So I bought it.
To this day it remains a classic. They are much more
rockin' than their image suggests. The title track from
Union Jacks is a prog metal anthem. This UK band
really hit their stride in 1979 with the arrival of two
US musicians: Ricky Phillips on bass and Jonathan Cain
on keyboards. John Waite, who had previously played bass
was now free to concentrate on the lead vocals and Cain
added substantially to their sound. Waite would later
enjoy huge solo success with the song 'Missing You'.
In late 1980 they opened for Journey. Before long The Babys
had split and Jonathan Cain was Journey's ivory tinkler.
This is a remastered FM recording.
If only they'd played 'Union Jacks'!
